Lameness

Perhaps the most frequent complaint I encounter in my daily work, lameness can vary from something as simple as gravel packed into the white line, to the complexity of a non-displaced pelvic fracture. Naturally, treatment options vary with all the different conditions causing lameness, however some simple rules apply:

  1. Pick out your horse’s feet daily.
  2. Have your horse’s feet competently trimmed or shod regularly (6-8 weeks).
  3. Feed your horse a good balance of minerals and vitamins.
  4. Try and avoid situations where your horse is walking in mud continually.
  5. Get the vet first. So often I come to a lame horse that has been seen by every witch doctor, faux herbalist and bone pointer in the district, and by the time I see it the horse has been suffering for weeks.
