One of the most useful procedures performed by us involves the full dental examination. After sedating the horse, we apply a Haussmann gag to the mouth and examine the mouth properly. Following this, the cheek teeth are floated with a Powerfloat (like a giant electric toothbrush!!) to ensure a smooth profile to the outside edges of the upper teeth, and the inside edges of the lower teeth. This stops the horse from cutting its cheek or tongue when chewing its food, thus enabling significant improvements in the initial digestion phase of the food. Of all the veterinary attention provided for horses, I consider this probably the most important thing I can do to enable the horse to lead a healthy life. I recommend that this be done annually, although sometimes horses need more frequent work depending on their condition.
